The Toshiba HDTV range is vast and incorporates a line of DLP projection, LCD, and plasma televisions. The company updated its range at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January. In this article, we take a look at the Toshiba HDTV DLP range.
Toshiba’s DLP high definition line-up consists of ten models, four 62in, four 52in, and two 46in displays. Half of the range is made up of HDTV monitors, ie there’s no integrated ATSC tuner, and the other half is fully-fledged HDTVs ready to receive and display off-the-air HDTV signals straight of the box.
Taking two of the displays from the middle of the range, the 52HM84 and 52HMX94 as examples, the overview below outlines the major features of the range.
The Toshiba 52HM84 is a 52in DLP projection HDTV monitor which, when connected to an HDTV receiver displays HDTV pictures at 1080i or 720p. By comparison, the 52HMX94 has an integrated tuner and can be connected directly to an HDTV antenna.
Both televisions use Texas’ Instruments’ Digital Light Processing (DLP) technology to project the picture from behind the screen and have a whole range of Toshiba bells and whistles with strange names designed to maximise the image quality on-screen. Of most interest are the HDMI connector, which allows the television to connect to Home Theater kit with HDMI and DVI outputs. Both TVs have FireWire (IEEE1394) ports for digital networking, and the 52MXH94 has Toshiba’s On Screen Interactive Program Guide built-in.
The CableCARD slot on both these TVs allows cable companies that support the technology to supply users with a card rather than a set-top box for decrypting protected content.
There are lots of audio bells and whistles too, including support for SRS WOW and Virtual Dolby.
DesignTechnica’s review of the 52HM84 concludes ‘Toshiba’s TheaterWideHD 52HM84 combined with the RCA’s DTC-210 DirecTV HD Receiver produced and reproduced the some of the best regular over-the-air HD, Satellite, Satellite HD, and DVD signals possible. This is a set that has to be seen in all its glory to be fully appreciated.'
